Reflections on 2023: Lessons Learned in the Chaos

As we bid farewell to 2023 and usher in 2024, I find myself reflecting on the chaotic, messy, and intense journey that was this past year. While it wasn't a terrible year, it certainly wasn't my best season. Being a new mom while juggling entrepreneurship and self-discovery has taught me many valuable lessons over the past year. Here's what I've learned:

1. Choose Clients Wisely: One lesson that keeps resurfacing on my journey is the importance of trusting my instincts when selecting clients. Despite sensing that a particular client wasn't the right fit from the outset, the allure of financial gain and the belief that I could make a difference clouded my judgment. The result? A loss of passion, burnout, and departure from my original vision. The takeaway: never compromise on client fit for short-term gains.

2. Set and Uphold Boundaries: "No is a full sentence," a mantra I've heard before but had to learn the hard way. It is essential to establish and maintain boundaries with clients, colleagues, peers, and even family members. A powerful act of self-preservation is standing firm, even when it is uncomfortable.

3. Prioritize Your Business: Considering your business as your most important client may sound obvious, but I learned that the hard way. As a marketing professional, I was so consumed with client work that I neglected my own brand and marketing strategies. The result? Slow growth, social media neglect, and burnout. Lesson learned: Put your company first. You'll better serve your clients when you know what you're doing.

4. Embrace Systems: Although not the most exciting lesson, systems are extremely important. Keeping organized and implementing efficient systems is essential. In 2024, I am committed to enhancing my systems to ensure consistency and efficiency in my business.

5. Confront Procrastination Head-On: Throughout the year, I procrastinated on paperwork and boring tasks (especially accounting) until it became an issue. It's the exact behavior I advise my clients against. The lesson here is to address procrastination head-on. Whether it's hiring a bookkeeper, scheduling regular admin days, or seeking additional support, tackle mundane tasks promptly to avoid challenges in your business.

As I reflect on 2023's highs and lows, these lessons serve as guiding principles for the upcoming year. I share them in the hopes that they resonate, particularly with fellow entrepreneurs and solopreneurs, especially those navigating the dual roles of motherhood and business ownership.
